It's there to protect the grip. Sweat that starts at the elbow ends up in your palm and then on the handle, and once an overgrip is damp it stops holding no matter how tacky it was out of the packet. A band on the racket arm catches most of that on the way down. Some players wear a second on the other wrist simply to wipe their face between points, which is what the pair is for.

The narrow ones are lighter and sit more neatly under a long sleeve in winter.
