Babolat Air Viper 2.6 Padel Racket

£180

The Babolat Air Viper is the quick one: the lightest racket in the Viper family, built for players who live at the net and want hands that react before they have finished thinking. The 2.6 is the 2026 edition, a 355 g teardrop (give or take 10 g) with a 16K carbon face, an X-EVA core and an even balance, according to Babolat's own sheet.

On Padelful's scale it scores 9.1 for both power and rebound and 9.0 for manoeuvrability. The price is a sweet spot of 7.4, which is the smallest number on its report card and the one that decides whether you will enjoy owning it.

Shops disagree about almost everything else, from the shape to the balance, so we have said which source we trust and why further down.

Air Viper or Counter Viper: pick your problem

Both are Vipers, both cost the same at Babolat's UK shop, and they are close to opposites. The Air Viper hands you pace and quick reactions and asks you to find the middle of the face. The Counter Viper 2.6 is the round, patient one: a huge sweet spot and a control score of 10, with the pace left for you to supply.

If your volleys are already clean and your weakness is finishing the point, the Air is the racket to try. If the thing that loses you games is the one that slips off the edge of the frame, buy the Counter and keep the money you would have spent on physio.

How the Babolat Air Viper plays

Hand speed is the headline. Padelful's tester called the manoeuvrability excellent and pointed out that for a racket of this shape the ball output is surprisingly good, with the smash among its strongest shots. A 16K face is stiff and gives a firm, direct response, and the textured finish helps with slice and the vibora.

Now the bill. A sweet spot of 7.4 is small, so off-centre contact loses pace and direction faster than on the other Vipers. Control is respectable at 8.7 but not the point of the racket. Expect to feel mishits, and expect your technique to be audited by the middle of your first set.

Babolat lists the Air Viper 2.6 as a teardrop with an even balance, and that is what we follow. One independent review calls it a diamond, one retailer calls it a hybrid and another puts balance at medium. The head is a touch narrower than a classic round frame in any case, so treat the shape word as shorthand for 'sweet spot sits a little high' and judge the racket by the scores.

Lightest Viper, but how light is 355 g?

Light by Viper standards, ordinary by padel standards. Babolat's 2026 Vipers run from 355 g up to 370 g, so the Air saves you about 10 to 15 g against the others, and with a tolerance of 10 g on every racket the weights overlap. What you feel is less the number and more the even balance, which lets the head turn quicker than on a head-heavy frame of the same mass.

If you need something properly light, with arm or wrist trouble in mind, 355 g is not that racket. Our best padel racket for intermediate players page has softer, lighter options.

Where the Air Viper fits among the Vipers

Babolat sells the Viper as a ladder from control to power. The Air sits in the middle on build and at the top on speed. For a pure attacker, the Technical Viper 3.0 is the 370 g diamond with a hard core, and the lighter Veron line, such as the Air Veron 2.6, is the other route to a quick racket; the round Counter Veron sits in the same family.

Who should not buy the Air Viper

Anybody who still finds the sweet spot about half the time. A 7.4 sweet spot is unforgiving for a player whose contact point wanders, and the best padel racket for beginners is round and soft for good reason; the best padel racket for beginners list is the place to start. Padelful's reviewer recommends the Air for intermediate to advanced players, and that is the sensible reading.

It is also not the ideal choice for a defensive player who wants to lob and block from the back. Look at the control padel rackets instead.

Not for you if

You mishit often, play mostly from the baseline, or want a racket to protect a sore arm. The firm 16K face and small sweet spot make every off-centre shot obvious. A rounder, softer frame will teach you more and hurt you less.

Setting up an Air Viper

Babolat recommends its Syntec Team grip, and the Smart Buttcap lets you fit or remove the wrist strap. Many players add a tacky overgrip on top; the Babolat VS overgrip is a safe choice, and our padel grips page covers when to use replacement grips instead. Protect the head with frame tape from the racket protector range, since a light racket tends to get swung into the floor more often than a heavy one, and players who want a little more heft can try Babolat Balancer tape in 3 g strips, and a replacement Babolat leash if the leash has worn.

Fresh balls matter more for a stiff, light racket than you would expect. A tube of Babolat Court balls is the natural partner, and the padel balls page explains how quickly they fade. The Babolat RH Pro bag holds it with a thermal pocket; other styles are on the padel bags page, and court shoes for sand-filled turf are on our padel shoes page.

To compare it with every other brand, the full padel racket range sits on one page, and our guide to choosing a padel racket explains how shape and balance change the feel. Strong players moving up can also browse the advanced padel rackets list.

Babolat Air Viper 2.6 Padel Racket: questions people ask

Is the Babolat Air Viper 2.6 the same as the Air Viper 2026?

Yes. Babolat numbers its rackets by version and 2.6 is the 2026 season. Retailers add the year to help shoppers; the racket is the same.

Is the Babolat Air Viper a teardrop or a diamond?

Babolat lists it as a teardrop with an even balance. Padelful describes it as a diamond and some retailers call it a hybrid, so shape names are not consistent. Use the scores: a high sweet spot and quick head speed.

Is the Air Viper good for intermediate players?

For confident intermediates, yes. Padelful recommends it for intermediate to advanced players. The sweet spot score of 7.4 means it punishes inconsistent contact, so players still learning the game will find a rounder racket easier.

Air Viper or Counter Viper, which is easier to play?

The Counter Viper. Padelful scores its sweet spot at 9.1 against 7.4 for the Air. The Air makes up for it with more power and rebound (9.1 each) and faster hands.

How heavy is the Babolat Air Viper 2.6?

Babolat lists 355 g with a 10 g tolerance either way, in a 38 mm frame. It is the lightest of the 2026 Vipers.

Does the Air Viper need a lot of looking after?

Not more than any carbon racket. Fit frame protector, keep it out of hot cars, and replace the overgrip when it goes slick. The face is firm, so a worn grip makes it feel harsher.
