Babolat Alioth Junior Padel Racket

£65.70

The Babolat Alioth Junior is a first padel racket for children, built for juniors aged mainly 8 to 12: a round, head-light frame at 320 g (give or take 10) with a 34 mm profile, an oversized head and a drilling pattern designed to make clean contact easier. Babolat calls it one of the lightest rackets it makes for children, and lists the frame as carbon with a fibreglass surface.

It sits in a three-step junior range. Babolat's Alioth Mini is the smaller racket for the youngest players, and the Alioth Pro Junior is the heavier teardrop for competitive children.

Below we cover the age and size question, how it compares with the other two Aliths and with the common alternatives, and when a child is ready to move on to an adult racket.

Is the Babolat Alioth Junior the right size for your child?

Babolat positions it for junior beginners mainly between 8 and 12, and retailers repeat that range. Age is only a guide. What matters is whether the child can hold the racket up at the net without the head dropping, and swing it for a full session without tiring. At 320 g with a head-light balance, it is deliberately easy to hold.

An ultra-light alternative is the Royal Padel junior, listed at 260 g. For comparison, an adult entry racket such as the Babolat Air Origin is about 345 g, and a performance racket like the Counter Viper 2.6 is 365 g. A child's wrist feels that 25 to 45 g difference on every shot, which is why juniors need their own range.

What the Alioth Junior is designed to do

Babolat's own description is about tolerance and manoeuvrability. A large round head and a central drilling pattern are meant to make it easier to hit the ball cleanly from anywhere on the face, the low balance is there to help children keep the racket in a good position, and the fibreglass surface is described as helping with ball placement. The hybrid frame adds a carbon core to the lightness, with fibreglass flexibility.

In plain terms it is a forgiving racket that does not tire a child's arm. It is not built to generate power, and it does not need to be: young players learn the game through placement and rallies, and a soft, light racket helps with both. The grip is also sized down for smaller hands, and Babolat recommends its Syntec Uptake grip.

A note on listings. Babolat lists the head as round. One retailer calls it a teardrop, and a few give a medium balance. We follow Babolat's sheet.

Alioth Junior, Mini or Pro Junior?

Babolat's three Alioths step up with age and ability. The Alioth Mini Junior is for under-8s, with retailers listing about 290 g (we have not found a Babolat sheet for it, so treat that as reported). The Alioth Pro Junior is a 330 g teardrop with a 36 mm profile for competitive children, also aged 8 to 12.

For most children, the Alioth Junior is the sensible middle: light enough for a beginner, big enough to last a couple of seasons.

Other junior rackets worth comparing

Babolat is one of several brands that make junior rackets. The Nox AT10 Genius Junior is the junior version of the AT10 line, the Head Speed Junior is a lightweight alternative, StarVie's ultra-soft Junior is another round first racket, and the Head Extreme Junior is a step up for stronger players. The Volt 500 Junior is another round soft one. For a simpler, lighter fibreglass option there is the Black Crown Piton Junior, and the Drop Shot Axion Attack Junior is a heavier choice for bigger children. Our kids padel racket page lays them side by side by age and height.

When to skip the Alioth Junior

If your child is tall, strong or already playing regularly at a club, the Pro Junior or one of the heavier junior rackets is a better fit, and by 13 or 14 many children are ready for a light adult racket. If your child is under 8, the Mini is a better size. In either case, the padel racket range has adult frames to move on to, and our guide to choosing a padel racket explains the weight and balance basics.

Not for you if

Your child is already competing or is much taller than their age group. The Alioth Junior is built for tolerance and lightness, not power, and a strong 11-year-old will outgrow it quickly. Look at the Alioth Pro Junior or the lighter adult frames on our best padel racket for beginners page.

Getting your child match-ready

A fresh grip helps small hands: a tacky overgrip such as the Babolat VS overgrip adds thickness if the grip feels slim, and our padel grips page explains how to fit one. Frame tape from the racket protector range is worth fitting, because children tend to drag rackets across the floor.

Balls matter too. A tube of Babolat Court balls is a sensible start, and the padel balls page explains how quickly they fade. The padel bags page has bags that fit a junior racket, and sand-dressed courts need the right footwear from our padel shoes page.

Babolat Alioth Junior Padel Racket: questions people ask

What age is the Babolat Alioth Junior for?

Babolat positions it for junior beginners mainly aged 8 to 12. Age is a guide: check that your child can hold it up at the net and swing it for a full session.

Is the Babolat Alioth Junior the same as the Alioth JR?

Yes. Babolat writes the name as Alioth JR on its own site, and shops write Alioth Junior. It is the 320 g round racket, listed here as the 2025 edition.

What is the difference between the Alioth Junior and the Alioth Pro Junior?

The Junior is a round 320 g racket with a 34 mm profile for beginners. The Pro Junior is a 330 g teardrop with a 36 mm profile for competitive children aged 8 to 12.

How heavy is the Babolat Alioth Junior?

Babolat lists 320 g with a 10 g tolerance and a head-light balance. That is about 25 g lighter than an entry adult racket.

Is the Alioth Junior a round or a teardrop racket?

Babolat lists it as round. One retailer calls it a teardrop, so shape labels vary between shops. The oversized round head is the feature Babolat highlights.

When should my child move up from the Alioth Junior?

When they outgrow the weight or the size, usually around 12 to 14 or when they begin to play competitively. The Alioth Pro Junior or a light adult racket is the next step.
